Exuma is a district of The Bahamas, consisting of over 365 islands and cays. The Exumas island chain is divided into three major areas: Great Exuma, Little Exuma, and the Exuma Cays.
Great Exuma, the largest of the islands, is 37 mi (60 km) in length and joined to another island, Little Exuma, by a small bridge. The capital and largest town in the district is Georgetown. Great Exuma is home to just 4,500 residents and is very safe.
The islands of Exuma offer a laid back experience for beach-lovers, nature adventurers, sun seekers and travellers who enjoy an off the beaten path escape. Exuma is undeniably one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
The Number 1 Reason to Visit Exuma is Incredible Beaches. "Exuma stands out for its breathtaking beaches, with each beach being more beautiful than the next."
See our Beaches photo gallery below.
The boating, diving, and fishing on the island are world class. You can rent or charter power boats, sailboats, sea kayaks and paddleboards. And don't forget there is the #1 tourist attraction - swimming with the pigs!
Waterfront dining, beach bars, nightlife is yours to explore in the Exumas. Friday night Fish Fry in Georgetown is not to be missed!
Here is a short list of our most frequently asked questions. If you need more information or details, please do not hesitate to contact us!
Many connecting and non stop commercial flights touch down in Georgetown (GGT) every day from major gateways in the U.S. and Canada. The airport is serviced by:
- Air Canada (direct flights every Sunday from Toronto between November and May)
- American Airlines (daily direct flights from Charlotte, NC)
- Delta Airlines (daily direct flights from Atlanta and Miami)
There are also local carriers BahamasAir, Silver Airways, and Western Air. These local carriers have daily direct flights from Nassau, and Fort Lauderdale.
Don’t think of the Bahamas as just a winter destination – the summer months are ideal for a vacation too! The ocean is warm and mostly quite calm during this time of year, and it is an ideal time for snorkeling and swimming.. Winter (November through April) is pleasantly temperate with occasional cold fronts that sometimes bring winds from the north, a bit of rain and slightly cooler temperatures. But rain never seems to last too long in the tropics – we will have a good passing shower or two, then the sun will reappear from behind the clouds soon enough!
The Bahamian dollar ($B) is equal to the U.S. dollar and Bahamian and U.S cash are used interchangeably throughout the Bahamas. You can use up your Bahamian change before departure.
A Value Added Tax of 10% is charged on most goods and services that registered businesses provide in The Bahamas.
We have a well on the property and have not yet had the water tested for drinking. We use tap water for washing fruits or vegetables, making coffee or pasta, or when brushing teeth. We supply some bottled drinking water or filtered water for all guests on arrival. Our 5 gallon water containers can be refilled at the Naturally Fresh Water company just down the street from our home.
Great Exuma (combined with Little Exuma) is 37 miles long. There is a lot to see and do. If you want to explore, go sightseeing, visit all the fabulous beaches and restaurants, a rental car is recommended. Coordinate the rental in advance and your car will be waiting for you at the airport when you arrive.
"KEEP LEFT"! In the Exumas, you drive on the left side of the road
Yes, all islands in the Bahamas have 110/120 Volt AC. Wall plugs are the same as in Canada and the U.S.
The Exumas are one of the most genuinely friendly places in the Bahamas and we are confident when we say Great Exuma is a safe island. The probability of being a victim of any crime in Exuma is very low, as with anywhere in the world, it is always wise to take the normal precautions with your valuables..
There are a few grocery stores in Georgetown (5 minute drive) and on the far side of town (10 minute drive), as well as a few beer/wine shops (the closest one being just 1 minute from our house, and the others are in town). There is also a great butcher shop on the far side of town (has groceries as well - Island Meats at the Darvelle Shopping Ctr). Most stores close around 6pm.
We are about 500 yards from the water, however, this is not a beach. Most of the beaches are reachable by car within 7-15 minutes from our place. A few more remote beaches at each end of the island are a 20-30 minute drive, but well worth the trip!
